Gifting with intention: a guide for the people who love us.
For partners, friends, family, and allies everywhere — how to choose a grooming gift that says 'I see you', not 'I grabbed this at the airport'.
The best gifts feel like being understood. A grooming gift, chosen well, says: I have noticed how you take care of yourself, and I want to be part of that. Chosen carelessly, it says the opposite. Here is how to land on the right side of that line.
This guide is for everyone who loves a Black gay man — partners, best friends, mothers and sisters, coworkers who want to get it right, and allies anywhere in the world. You do not need to be an expert. You just need to pay attention.
Start with what he already uses
Look at his bathroom shelf the next time you visit. Does he keep a beard, or keep it clean-shaven? Does he favor a particular scent family? Is his skin care elaborate or minimal? A deluxe version or a complementary piece of what he already loves is almost always better received than something that asks him to change his routine.
Respect the texture
Products formulated for straight hair are often too drying or too heavy for coily hair and beards. Look for brands that explicitly formulate for textured hair and melanin-rich skin — many of them Black-owned. That detail alone shows a level of thought that will not go unnoticed.
Ideas by kind of man
- The meticulous groomer: a beautifully made single-blade razor, or a premium beard oil he would not buy himself.
- The homebody: a soft organic robe, a candle with warm woody notes, and a record to go with them.
- The traveler: a well-edited travel kit that fits in a carry-on.
- The romantic: a fragrance discovery set, so he can find his next signature on his own terms.
- The one who gives everything to everyone: an evening that is entirely about his rest — and the gift of you handling the details.
Supporting with your spending
Where you buy matters. Choosing Black-owned and LGBTQ+-owned brands puts money directly into the communities you care about. Many of the products we feature on Melanin & Mane come from founders who built them precisely because the mainstream market did not serve them.
The card matters more than the box
Write a few lines about why you chose it. 'You always smell incredible, and this reminded me of you.' 'You take care of everyone — this is for taking care of you.' The product will run out. The note will be kept.
Allyship is a practice of attention. Gifts are just one beautiful way to show it.
