Carry-on ready: grooming for the man who travels.

Pride in another city, a wedding across the ocean, a long weekend with chosen family. How to pack a kit that keeps you sharp anywhere.

Some of the best memories of our lives happen somewhere else. A Pride weekend in a city you have never seen. A friend's wedding on another continent. A spontaneous trip with people who have become family. The last thing you want is to spend it worrying about a dry scalp, an ashy face, or the edge-up that grew out on day three.

Build the kit once

Keep a dedicated travel bag permanently packed, and restock it when you get home. It turns packing from a scramble into a single zip. Choose travel-size versions of what you already use, or decant into small, leak-proof bottles under the airline liquid limits.

  • A gentle face cleanser and a moisturizer that works in both humid and dry climates.
  • Broad-spectrum sunscreen — vacations mean more hours outside than you expect.
  • Hair and beard oil, plus a small leave-in or butter for coils.
  • A compact trimmer and a single-blade razor to keep lines clean.
  • A satin or silk bonnet, durag, or pillowcase — hotel cotton is unkind to hair.
  • Lip balm, a travel-size fragrance, and a small deodorant.
  • Any personal medications in their original packaging, kept in your carry-on.

Surviving the flight

Cabin air is famously dry. Skin can feel tight and look dull by landing, and coily hair loses moisture fast. Cleanse and moisturize before you leave, carry a face mist and lip balm, and drink more water than seems necessary. A durag or soft wave cap protects your hair against headrests and helps it arrive looking the way it left.

Read the climate

Humid destinations call for lighter layers and gel textures; your skin will produce more oil and coils will swell. Dry or cold destinations call for richer creams, more frequent oiling, and a balm for your hands and lips. Hard water in some cities can leave hair feeling coarse — a few extra drops of oil and a rinse-out conditioner make a real difference.

Stay on schedule without overthinking it

Travel is not the time to introduce new actives. Leave strong exfoliants and retinoids at home if you will be in the sun, and keep to the basics: cleanse, moisturize, protect. If you plan to see a barber abroad, look at their portfolio for work on textured hair before you book, or get a fresh cut a few days before you go.

Traveling safely, traveling proudly

Laws and attitudes toward LGBTQ+ people vary widely around the world. Before you go, check current official travel advice and resources from reputable LGBTQ+ travel organizations, and connect with local community groups when you can. Many cities have vibrant Black and queer scenes that welcome visitors warmly — and they are often the best part of the trip.
